ABOUT THIS WEB SITE

Sources, References, and Links

This site was constructed by the Hyde Park Book Store. Information on paperback artists and publishing houses comes from our years in the business, gathering data here and there. Some primary and recommended sources are shown below, and we eagerly welcome any new information and corrections. The scans come from our own collections, but we assume copyrights to the images still belong to the stated publishers.

REFERENCES

Most of the major publishing houses provide historical background information, and several have had books written about them. There are also biographies and autobiographies on the leading men and women in the publishing business.

Click here for Reference Books on American Publishing Firms.

For a more comprehensive listing of publishing houses and the general history of publishing, my primary references is the four volume set::

History of Book Publishing in the United States, by John Tebbel, RR Bowker, 1972.

For overviews of the paperback business and artists:

Two-Bit Culture: The Paperbacking of America, by Kenneth C. Davis, Houghton-Mifflin, 1984

Hardboiled America, by Geofrey O'Brien, Van Nostrand Rienhold, 1981.

LINKS

Perhaps we are simply looking in the wrong places, but we have found very few sites with information about paperback artists and publishing histories. Again, we welcome suggestions, which we will gladly post here. A few years ago a class at the University of North Carolina built a web site with information and samples on some leading illustrators. It can be found at:

http://ils.unc.edu/rarebooks/illustrators.html

At least one paperback illustrator has his own web-site:

Robert McGinnis
