imitators than that developed
by James Avat, frequently

championed as the "Father of
Paperback Art", or the
"Rembrandt of Paperbacks.".
His first cover, done in 1948
at the request

of the famous Kurt Enoch at
New American Library, was
Signet 706, Last of the
Conquerors. Several more
illustrations

followed for Signet re-issues
of books originally covered by
Robert Jonas. About a year
later, he moved over to
Bantam.

convey not simply a scene
from the book, but a sense of
what the overall book was
about, its
