HYDE PARK BOOKS
ROBERT E.
McGINNIS
Robert McGinnis did his first
paperback cover in 1956, a
Mike Shayne mystery for
Dell at the urging of art
director Walter Brooks. This
led to his being the principal
artist for the Shayne Mystery
series. The direct art-style
worked well the the type of
writing found in the books,
and this became his niche; he
even did the covers for most
of Signet's similar Carter
Brown adventure series.
Born 1926 in Ohio.
First important art job was at
the Walt Disney Studios,
where he drew Mickey
Mouse and other notables.
By some accounts he ran
away from home and
hitchhiked across country to
meet Walt Disney. After
World War II, he returned to
Ohio and resumed his
education in earnest. He
attended Ohio State
University, where he starred
as a football player, and the
Central Academy of
Commerical Art.
