Descended from signers of the Constitution.

In charge of subscription department at Scribner's, he ran a subsidiary, E.B. Treat & Co. until 1871 when he became an independent firm.

First success: Golden Thoughts, collection of poems edited by Rev. Theodore Euyler.

His sons, William and Edwin C., took over the business in 1901.
